ECR EGTC Welcomes DG MOVE Delegation to Roadside Inspections in Belgium

Representatives of the European Commission joined ECR EGTC for a roadside inspection visit in Ruisbroek, Belgium, where VLABEL and the Belgian Federal Police demonstrated multidisciplinary road transport enforcement in practice.

On 9 October 2026, Euro Contrôle Route European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (ECR EGTC) welcomed a delegation from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) to a roadside enforcement operation along the E19 motorway near Brussels. The inspections were conducted by the VLABEL Control Service, part of the Flemish Tax Administration (Vlaamse Belastingdienst), in cooperation with the Belgian Federal Police.

The visit brought together Frédéric Versini, Head of Unit C1 (Road Transport), who led the DG MOVE delegation; David Van Herreweghe, Head of VLABEL; and Heinz Albert Stumpen, Director of ECR EGTC, alongside representatives of ECR EGTC's French Presidency and Croatian Vice-Presidency.

Multidisciplinary Roadside Inspections

The operation covered driving and resting times, tachograph compliance, transport authorisations, vehicle mass and dimensions, technical roadworthiness, cargo securing, exceptional transport and dangerous goods (ADR), where applicable.

According to VLABEL, the inspection teams recorded 20 infringements and six warnings, with associated sanctions totalling €34,105. Notable findings included six technical infringements among 21 vehicles inspected and four mass-related infringements among 12 vehicles checked. The financial total represents associated sanctions, not necessarily payments collected.

Connecting European Policy with Enforcement Practice

Taking place during ECR EGTC's Coordinated Control Weeks of 5–10 October 2026, the visit allowed DG MOVE representatives to observe roadside enforcement firsthand and exchange perspectives with national inspectors on the practical application of European transport legislation.

ECR EGTC extends its sincere appreciation to VLABEL and the Belgian Federal Police for organising and carrying out the operation, to DG MOVE for its participation, and to all involved inspectors and representatives for their cooperation.
